2017 Fountain Of Youth Stakes Contenders

Undefeated Mohaymen came into the 2016 Fountain of Youth looking to secure his spot in the Kentucky Derby gate, and when the dust had settled he had done just that, picking up the win and the 50 qualifying points that essentially gaurantees the Kiaran McLaughlin trainee a chance to run for the roses May 7. After getting bumped a bit out of the gate, Mohaymen settled well in fifth place in the six-horse race, just four lengths off the leader. Moving steadily forward down the backstretch, he went by pace-setter Awesome Banner midway through the turn, and then hooked the upset minded Zulu at the top of the stretch. Those two ran heads apart through a furlong, before Mohaymen dug in to pull away and win by a comfortable 2 1/4 lengths. Zulu hung on for second, the first defeat of his three-race career, while 22-1 lobgshot Fellowship was third.
