Bet on the Donn Handicap

The Donn Handicap is a prestigious race for older horses held every year, at Gulfstream Park, typically at the beginning of February. With a purse of $500,000 along with Grade 1 status, the mile and an eighth contest routinely attracts some of the best older horses in the country as they begin their year-long campaign. Because of the scheduling of the race, it also can serve as a key prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup held at the end of March at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates.

2017 Donn Handicap Contenders

With 2015 (G1) Travers winner Keen Ice in the field as the favorite, there was good betting value to be had among several of the other contenders. Out of the gate it was Financial Modeling who went ot the early lead, hard pressed by Valid, who would stay on that ine's flank until assuming command himself as the field went through the final turn. Heading for home, jockey John Valezquez angled Mshawish out toward the middle of the track and set him down for the drive. Meanwhile, a tiring Financial Modeling and a game Valid were in a bumping contest in deep stretch, and Mshawish had the fast turn of foot that propelled him past those two and up to front, eventually taking the win by 2 lengths, with Valid holding on for second and Mexicoma rallying up for third. Keen Ice came flying late but simply ran out of racetrack and could do ne better than sixth.

Did you know?

Since the Donn Handicap was first run in 1959, the race has attracted some of the top older horses in history. The great Cigar, trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Jerry Bailey, won the Donn not once, but twice. His first win came in 1995 and the champion returned to win the following year. Cigar is one of only three horses to win multiple editions of the Donn.

Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey has the distinction of being the most winning jockey in the history of the race and has won the Donn an impressive six times. Two of those wins came aboard Cigar but he also was aboard Jade Hunter (1988), Skip Away (1998), Captain Steve (2001) and Medaglia d’Oro (2004).
