American Pharoah Returns in Grade 2 Rebel Stakes
The road to the Kentucky Derby continues at Oaklawn Park March 14 with the $750,000 Grade 2 Rebel Stakes, as a field of seven is set to contest the 1 1/16 race.
Two year-old sensation American Pharoah (1/2) is set to make his three year-old debut after being forced to the sidelines with an injury following his win in the September 27 Front Runner Stakes at Santa Anita. The Bob Baffert trainee has won two of three career starts including impressive performances in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and the aforementioned Grade 1 Front Runner. American Pharoah would have been the likely favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The son of Pioneerof the Nile has posted a string of blazing workouts for his return including a bullet move March 6 at Santa Anita where he covered six furlongs from the gate in 1:10 – the fastest of 36 works at the distance. American Pharoah will break from post four under Victor Espinoza and is the controlling speed of the race.
McPeek colt moving forward
The Truth Or Else (4/1) ran a credible race in the Grade 3 Southwest, narrowly losing to the well-regarded Far Right while making his first start since November. The Kenny McPeek trainee has just a maiden victory to his credit in eight career starts, but looks to be improving.
Florida shipper has ability
Todd Pletcher sends out Madefromlucky (6/1), who ships in from Gulfstream after beating maiden special weight foes and optional allowance company in his two starts this year. Madefromlucky has excellent tactical speed and should receive a clean trip.
