Galopin des Champs won last year and is likely to be a hot favorite in 2024. There are excellent reasons why: he comes in off an Irish Gold Cup (G1) win just like he did last year, he has the proven class and stamina, and the soft ground should suit him. He is a consistently good horse proven at the class and the distance, and his foes will have to find their best ever in order to topple him.
The one with the most upside against the favorite is L’Homme Presse. He won the Novices’ Chase (G1) at Cheltenham in 2022, and though he didn’t race at all in 2023 he has come back with two solid efforts this year, including a comeback win against Protektorat at Lingfield and a second in a Grade 1 at Ascot. He has back class, and unlike several others in this field has not been recently conquered by Galopin des Champs.
Fastorslow has, unlike others in here, landed a few blows against the favorite. He beat Galopin des Champs twice last year, most recently in the Punchestown Chase in November. However, that race had Galopin des Champs first off the layoff, and that one turned the tables at Leopardstown in February in the Irish Gold Cup.
Bravemansgame was second to the favorite in this race last year, and he has run consistently enough to rate a chance for an underneath share again. The distance and the soft going should not hinder him, either. He would be a surprise to see win the whole thing, but he always shows up for the exotics against top-class types and has every chance to do so yet again.
Among true long shots, consider The Real Whacker. He won the Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last year, one of multiple strong efforts over this course. Though he still has some class to prove against these more experienced chasers, he got a good local screw-tightener in January and can contend for a piece if he runs one of his better races.
