Aqueduct Ladies Lone Stakes on Sunday Card
As the lone stakes race in North America January 10, the $100,000 Aqueduct Ladies figures to grab the attention of horseplayers despite drawing just five horses following the scratch of 8/1 shot Sheriffa in the mile and 70 yard event on the main track.
Wonder Gal, tabbed as the 8/5 morning line favorite, finished her 2015 campaign with a third-place effort in the Grade 3 Comely Stakes November 28 at Aqueduct and looks formidable in this softer spot. The Leah Gyarmati trainee won the Empire Distaff two starts back and has proven her class with multiple grade 1 placings in her career including a second-place efforts in the Grade 1 Frizette and Mother Goose last summer. Jockey Irad Ortiz gets the call breaking from post 3.
Mei Ling in good form
Mei Ling (2/1) is the main rival breaking from post 4. The Todd Pletcher trainee doesn’t win often (3 for 15 lifetime), but has raced well lately including a second-place finish November 27 in the Grade 3 Go For Wan Stakes. The five year-old daughter of Empire Maker finished 2015 by winning 2 of her last 4 starts and fits in nicely against this group with Jose Ortiz in the irons.
Sustainable tries tougher foes
Sustainable (4/1) is another filly that rates a look. Hailing from the Kiaran McLaughlin barn, this five year-old daughter of Forestry finished 2015 on a winning note, taking an allowance optional claimer December 4 at Aqueduct. Sustainable lacks the stakes resume of her top competitors, but gets a confident nod from a top trainer.
