One of the strongest favorites of the Breeders’ Cup will be Idiomatic, and she deserves that status. She is coming into the Distaff in the best form, while facing the strongest foes compared to who she sees in this race. And, even though there is a lot of speed in this race, she can win from just off the pace as well, giving her the versatility not to get burned in a duel.
If anyone catches Idiomatic in the late stages, Pretty Mischievous is the most likely candidate. Though she has yet to face older mares yet, the Kentucky Oaks winner has been running fast enough against her age group to fit in this spot well. Even though she was defeated last out, she gets a much better setup this time, and should fire second off the lay.
Clairiere is the epitome of an exotics type for this race. Santa Anita isn’t the kindest to true closers like she is. However, she has been able to take her form with her and she has closed sharply to finish less than a length beaten in each of the last two Distaffs. Especially given how well she bounced back from an aberration in the Personal Ensign last year, it would be no surprise to see her take advantage of the sharp pace and hit the board again.
The two West Coast denizens to watch are Desert Dawn and Adare Manor. Desert Dawn has been running on for places and shows behind Adare Manor in short-field distaff races out west. This is a deeper field, but it is also a field likely to run a race that sets up better for this plucky, consistent filly’s late-running style. She can invade the underneath rungs of exotics.
Adare Manor will be an underlay on top, as the local horse carrying a win streak into this race. She has been beating four- and five-horse fields instead of larger, deeper groups like this one. But, she does have the home-court factor in her favor, and she is a speed horse who can be a little tractable if need be.
