The $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack is the third and final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown. The race, scheduled for Sunday, October 2, drew a field of nine of the best three-year-old Canadian-bred horses in training to go 1 ½ miles over Woodbine’s E. P. Taylor turf course. The field is led by Hall of Dreams and Sir for Sure, the second- and third-place finishers in the Queen’s Plate, as well as Prince of Wales winner Duke of Love.
The race’s history dates back to 1889, and many top Canadian horses have won it over its history. Though Gaston faces winners for only the first time in this race, it is a reasonable step up from an open maiden special win to this Canadian-bred stakes. That especially holds true because he has really figured it out after switching to the turf and adding distance. With his high-powered connections, tactical versatility and solid stamina pedigree, this Kevin Attard trainee looks well placed.
Trainer Mark Casse, another perennial force at Woodbine, sends out both Sir for Sure and Hall of Dreams. Sir for Sure is a bit more interesting. Though he unseated his jockey in the Prince of Wales, he was going the right way before that with wins in the Prince of Wales and then a good third in the Queen’s Plate. He has yet to try grass, but with Tapeta talent, turf pedigree, and distance breeding, he makes sense to move up.
Hall of Dreams is a consistent sort who often gets a share. He may be overbet given his consistency and the fact that many players tend to think that a closer who usually doesn’t get there just needs more ground. But, he rallies frequently enough to be logical to use in underneath rungs, especially on tickets that are narrower on top and spread below.
Dancin in Da’nile ran off the board in the Plate Trial and the Queen’s Plate, but three starts back he tried firm turf for the first time and he ran a very good third. Between the class drop and the fact that he comes second off the lay, he should be able to move up. Furthermore, he also has a solid distance pedigree. With all this, he can continue a solid summer for trainer Julia Carey.
