The best bet in the 2023 Breeders’ Stakes is Tito’s Calling. Though she is a filly facing males for the first time, the way she won the Wonder Where last out makes her appealing. In that 1 ¼-mile turf race, she tracked a sluggish pace and finished powerfully enough to win by four lengths.
The pace is likely to be slow again this time, as well. If she can make the same kind of closing run and stay the extra quarter-mile of this trip, she can win the Breeders’ at appealing odds.
In a race without a lot of early speed, it makes sense to find that speed. The speed in this race is the same one who stole the King’s Plate on the front end: Paramount Prince. The biggest question is how well he will handle grass, as he has yet to try turf. But, horses who like Tapeta often do end up handling grass. If he does, then his class, consistency, and pace advantage make him a serious contender.
Although Wickenheiser did not get all the way there in the Wonder Where last out, she still ran well to finish second. She closed into a sluggish pace despite getting a less-than-great start. If she manages to come away better, she may be able to either sit more tactically or have more in the tank for later. Since she is one of the better-bred long-distance runners, that stamina combined with an ability to close into a slow pace means she has a shot.
Among the long shots in the field, British Artillery deserves a long look. He has perhaps the best 12-furlong pedigree in the field, meaning he can outstay the foes who tire. Furthermore, he is one of the few horses in the field with speed. Assuming he can get a decent break from that near-inside gate, he should be able to sit in close range of Paramount Prince, get an early run, and be a late threat at big odds.
Even though Elysian Field will probably run into the same issue she did in the King’s Plate – specifically, being unable to get all the way there behind a sluggish pace – she kept chasing tenaciously that day and may be able to do so again. She wasn’t losing ground late on a pace-advantaged Paramount Prince that day, and if she finds a similar effort she can chase on for a piece of the money again.
