On Friday at Churchill Downs, the stakes action will continue with the $200,000 Turf Sprint Stakes. Carded at five furlongs on the turf, the Grade 3 event has drawn a wide open field of thirteen colts and geldings.
Hootenanny, the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner, has been installed as the morning line favorite in the contentious group at odds of 7-2 for trainer Wesley Ward. A four-year-old son of Quality Road, he has been on the board in seven of his eight starts and is a four-time winner. He made his first start since competing at Royal Ascot last summer in April and finished second on synthetics at Woodbine as the heavy favorite. John Velazquez will be in the irons and they will break from post position seven.
Guns Loaded from claimer to graded stakes winner
Second choice at morning line odds of 4-1 is Guns Loaded for trainer Doug O’Neill. A five-year-old gelded son of D’Wildcat, he is an eight time winner and has ascended the ranks from claiming horse to graded stakes winner. He is coming into this race off of three consecutive victories and was last seen winning the San Simeon Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. Mario Gutierrez will be aboard from post position twelve.
Summation Time trying to return to form
Also in the field at morning line odds of 8-1 is Summation Time for trainer Christophe Clement. A five-year-old son of In Summation, he has been on the board in eight of his twelve starts and is trying to earn his fourth victory. He is coming out of a fourth-place finish in the Shakertown Stakes (G3) last time out and was second in his only other start this year. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post position two.
