Ishaq Favored Off Brilliant Maiden Win in $100,000 Inaugural Stakes
On Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, the track will host the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes. Restricted to two-year-olds, the six furlong contest has attracted a competitive field of eleven colts and geldings.
Ishaq tops the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 for trainer Efran Loza, Jr. A homebred for St. George Stable, the bay son of Harlan’s Holiday will be stepping up to stakes competition for the first time after breaking his maiden in his debut. In that race at Tampa Bay Downs, he rolled to an effortless 10 ¼ length victory over ten rivals. Pedro Cotto, Jr. will be back aboard and they will break from post position three.
Formal Summation trying to regain form
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Formal Summation for trainer Kathleen O’Connell. Purchased for only $6,200 as a yearling, the dark bay son of In Summation has won two of his five starts including the Laurel Futurity. He has been fourth in his last two races, both against stakes competition, and will try to move forward with jockey Ron Allen, Jr. in the irons from post position five.
Stakes debut for maiden winner Brerry
Also in the field at morning line odds of 12-1 is longshot Brerry and is one of two contenders in the race for trainer Eoin Harty. A chestnut son of Haynesfield, he cost $140,000 as a yearling and will be trying to earn his first black type victory. After a runner-up effort in his debut, he came back to break his maiden last time out. Manoel Cruz will be aboard and they will break from post position six.
