New York Stallion Stakes Draws 6
The $100,000 New York Stallion Stakes for three year-old, New York-bred horses April 24 at Aqueduct has drawn a field of six in the first of two stakes events on the card.
Sudden Surpise will break from the rail as the 9/5 morning line favorite, representing the well know trainer/jockey combination of Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez. Sudden Suprise has won 5 of 8 starts in his career for earnings over $438,000, but will have to bounce back from a sixth-place finish in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes March 6 at Aqueduct. Prior to that effort, the son of Giant Surprise finished second in the Gander Stakes. A winner of 4 New York stakes races a juvenile, Sudden Surprise is 0 for 2 in 2016, but lands in a much softer spot here than the Winkfield.
Bust Another makes stakes debut
Bust Another (5/2) has wo 4 of 6 starts for trainer Michael Pino and is a logical contender. The son of Bustin Stones has won 3 of 4 this year, and tackles stakes foes for the first time after winning an allowance race April 8 at Aqueduct. The quick turnaround could be viewed as a vote of confidence from Pino who looks to strike while the iron is hot.
Dr. Shane makes return for seasonal debut
Dr. Shane (7/2) breaks from the outside post for trainer Nicholas Esler and makes his 2016 debut. The son of Freud has an active juvenile campaign, winning 2 of 8 starts while finishing off the board just once. Dr. Shane ran second in the Notebook Stakes and New York Stallion Stakes Series, while winning the New York Breeders' Furturity. He will try to turn the tables on Sudden Surprise - a rival he encountered several times in 2015.
