No Shortage of Star Power in $700,000 Ashland Stakes
While the three-year-old males will be competing in the final leg of the Triple Crown, the sophomore fillies will also be showcased as part of the Belmont Stakes Day undercard. The probable field for the one mile, $700,000 Acorn Stakes could be one of the best of the day.
Though champion Songbird is still on the sidelines preparing for her return, the Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Cathryn Sophia will be the likely favorite. A bay daughter of Street Boss trained by Jason Servis, she has won five of her six starts and in her only defeat was third in the Ashland Stakes (G1). She has been training steadily at Monmouth Park since winning the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and clocked a recent bullet workout. Regular rider Javier Castellano is scheduled to be aboard.
Carina Mia looking for second straight stakes win
Her main opposition could come from the lightly-raced Carina Mia. Trained by Bill Mott, she was excluded from the field for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and instead delivered handily in the Eight Belles Stakes (G2) on the undercard. She has won three of her five starts and is a multiple graded stakes winning daughter of Malibu Moon. She has been training at Saratoga since leaving Churchill Downs.
Go Maggie Go short on experience, not talent
Another likely contender is another lightly-raced filly, Go Maggie Go. Trained by Dale Romans, she won the first two starts of her career including the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2). From there, she finished fourth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and came back to win the Black Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico. Bred and owned by Mike Tarp, the daughter of Ghostzapper will have Luis Saez in the irons.
