QE II Challenge Headlines Saturday Card at Keeneland
A lone stakes race appears on the October 10 card at Keeneland, but its one worth watching. The $500,000 Grade 1 Queens Elizabeth II Challenge features a strong field with 9 three year-old fillies set to contest the mile and one eighth event on turf.
Sentiero Italiano will break from post 9 as the morning line favorite for trainer Kiaran Mclaughlin following her win in the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes September 12 at Belmont last out. The impressive daughter of Madaglia d’Oro has won 4 of six career starts including another Grade 2 win in the Lake Placid Stakes two races back at Saratoga. Ridden by Joel Rosario, Sentiero Italiano is strictly the one to beat based on her class, speed figures and strong recent form.
Feathered consistent on turf
Feathered (5/1) has been strong on the grass since switching to the surface May 1 at Churchill while winning the Grade 3 Edgewood Stakes. Since then, the Todd Pletcher trainee finished second in the Grade 1 American Oaks and Grade 2 Lake George, while returning to winning form August 30 in an allowance event at Saratoga. Feathered has been freshened accordingly with Pletcher connecting at a high percentage of runners returning from 30-45 day layoffs. Javier Castellano will be in the irons breaking from post 8.
Miss Temple City tries to flip script
Miss Temple City (5/1) should receive plenty of wagering support for trainer Graham Motion after finishing second in the Lake Placid and third in the Sands Point. She will need to find more to turn the tables on Sentiero Italiano, but will be in the mix once again.
