On Friday at Keeneland, the fall meet will kick off with the $250,000 Ogden Phoenix Stakes. A Grade 3 event, the race will serve as a prep race for the Breeders Cup Sprint (G1) and the six-furlong contest has drawn a field of twelve colts and geldings.
Runhappy headlines the competitive field as the morning line favorite at odds of 9-5 for newcomer trainer Maria Borell. A three-year-old son of Super Saver, the bay colt has won four of his five starts and has rapidly ascended the ranks as one of the top sprinters in the country. He will be facing older rivals in stakes company for the first time and was last seen winning the King’s Bishop (G1) at Saratoga. Edgar Prado will be in the irons and they will break from the rail.
Defending champion Work All Week looms large
Second choice at morning line odds of 2-1 is Work All Week for trainer Roger Brueggemann. Bred and owned by Midwest Thoroughbreds, he earned the Eclipse Award for Champion Sprinter in 2014 and used the Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G3) as a springboard to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).He won a minor stakes race at Mountaineer last time out in August and will break from the outside post under regular rider Florent Geroux.
Holy Boss aiming for second graded stakes win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 4-1 is Holy Boss for trainer Steve Asmussen. A three-year-old son of Street Boss, he has won five of his nine starts and earned his first graded stakes victory two starts back in the Amsterdam Stakes (G2) at Saratoga. He was third in the King’s Bishop (G1) last time out and will be taking on older horses for the first time. Ricardo Santana, Jr. will be aboard and they will break from post four.
